00:00
today we’re gonna talk about time
00:01
management hacks in law school
00:03
there is absolutely no substitute for
00:05
hard work in law school but I can
00:07
recommend a few things that will save
00:08
you a hell of a lot of time to work
00:10
smarter instead of harder so stay tuned
00:17
so let’s talk about time management
00:20
hacks for law school things that will
00:22
help you save a huge amount of time so
00:24
that you can do the things that will
00:25
really help on the final exam
00:27
and get you better grades at the end of
00:30
the semester so we want to cut out all
00:33
the busy work possible the first time
00:35
saving tip that I would recommend is to
00:37
get prior outlines get old outlines that
00:40
are specifically tailored for your
00:42
professor you can talk to upperclassmen
00:45
who have had your professor before or
00:48
you can go to outline depot.com outline
00:51
depot.com is great i have no affiliation
00:53
with them but it’s a great website where
00:55
if you upload one outline you’re allowed
00:58
to get a credit to download someone
00:59
else’s outline and because so many
01:01
people have uploaded outlines to their
01:04
database odds are they’re going to have
01:07
a prior outline for your specific
01:10
professor in the class that you’re
01:12
taking so I would recommend getting a
01:13
handful of outlines for your specific
01:16
professor so that you can use those as a
01:18
template to make your own outlines it’s
01:21
it’s no substitute for putting in the
01:23
time learning the law but it can provide
01:25
a great foundation that you can add or
01:27
subtract to it’s the beginning of the
01:30
process that you can use to save a lot
01:33
of time instead of doing it from scratch
01:34
by the same token use commercial
01:37
outlines and case proofs things like
01:39
Emmanuel’s for contracts there are
01:42
commercial outlines in just about any
01:44
class that you can think of they will
01:46
save you a huge amount of time in
01:48
learning the substantive law and
01:50
recently there have been preponderance
01:52
of websites and databases out there that
01:56
will case brief every single case you
01:58
could possibly come across for you it
02:01
can save you a huge amount of time we
02:03
don’t advocate doing any case briefs we
02:04
think they’re a waste of time
02:06
but it’s great to look at other case
02:08
briefs to provide a foundation before
02:11
you read the case it’s
02:12
great to understand what the general
02:15
idea of the case is before you dig into
02:18
your case book and read the case
02:19
yourself tip number three use Westlaw
02:22
Westlaw is great you will use it all the
02:25
time in practice either Westlaw or
02:27
LexisNexis so you might as well get
02:30
familiar with it in law school and one
02:33
of the great things you can do is if you
02:34
don’t want to go the commercial case
02:36
brief route things like Quimby for
02:38
example you can use Westlaw to look up
02:41
the case that your professor wants you
02:44
to read even if the case is old Westlaw
02:47
has an army of reference attorneys that
02:49
summarize every single case you could
02:51
just read through the Westhead notes and
02:54
get a good idea of what the case is
02:56
about and then probably summarizes the
02:58
exact rule of law that you’re going to
03:00
need to learn for the final exam so
03:03
don’t be afraid to use Westlaw it’s not
03:05
cheating it’s a great way to practice
03:08
something that you’re going to use all
03:09
the time in researching in the real
03:12
world tip number four outlined from day
03:15
one this is controversial a lot of
03:17
people wait until the very last few
03:19
weeks of the semester before the outline
03:21
I think that’s a horrible mistake
03:22
if you outline every single weekend you
03:25
synthesize all of the substantive lawyer
03:27
your notes with your commercial outlines
03:30
and you put it into a form that you
03:32
understand you get that work done ahead
03:35
of time it gives you so much more time
03:37
at the end of the semester to do
03:39
practice exams to to memorize the
03:43
black-letter law that you’re going to
03:44
use on the final exams it’s a huge
03:47
advantage that saves you a huge amount
03:49
of time and creates more study time at
03:51
the end of the semester tip number five
03:53
take a course on law school essays there
03:57
are clear strategies for issue spotting
03:59
exams that you can use on any class
04:02
whether it’s an exam for contracts or
04:05
con law or torts or whatever standard
04:08
strategies will work on any issue
04:10
spotting exam legal eagle has a course
04:13
and there are others out there that are
04:14
also very good it saves you a huge
04:16
amount of time because you can learn to
04:19
take law school essays yourself but you
04:22
have to take a number of
04:23
practice exams and often professors only
04:25
give you so many practice exams so it
04:28
can save you a huge amount of time to
04:30
learn the strategies upfront so you
04:32
don’t have to brute-force your way
04:34
through a huge number of practice exams
04:36
because they take hours and hours to get
04:38
through every single practice exam if
04:40
you learn the strategies and start
04:42
taking practice exams at least halfway
04:44
through the semester long before
04:46
everyone else starts taking practice
04:49
exams you will be miles ahead by the
04:51
time the study period rolls around and
04:53
you will save a huge amount of time
04:55
before you have to take your first final
04:58
exam so remember you can learn the
05:01
strategies that go into an issue
05:02
spotting exam in the same way that you
05:04
learn the strategies for reading
05:06
comprehension and logic games in LSAT
05:09
and if you learn those strategies and
05:11
you start taking practice exams sooner
05:13
it will save you a huge amount of time
05:15
and you will be ready for your final
05:17
exams much earlier than everybody else
05:19
and when you’re graded on a curve that’s
05:21
what matters being better than everybody
